Review By J.B – Researching GPS devices was and is worse than buying a car with all the different product offerings and features plus none of the model numbering seems to make sense which was even more frustrating. You can’t tell a low end unit from a high end unit. Garmin is no different either.

Through all of that I am very pleased that I settled on the Garmin 1450. IMO Garmin has made a wonderful device. The UI is very intuitive and very easy to operate even with my big hands. The touch screen is very accurate and responsive. From power up to satelite acquisiiton takes seconds. The turn by turn instructions are very clear but a bit too chatty. We have found the street name pronunciations fairly entertaining. The points of interest have been pretty accurate as has the gas station mapping and the hospitals and such. The bread and butter of a GPS is really whether it can get you where you need to go especially if you as the operator have no idea. I have travelled outside my area of familiarity a few times now and this GPS receiver has been flawless. The screen size is very nice and easy to read while driving.

This unit I purchased has liftime maps and traffic. So the first thing I did was register the unit and update the maps. The web site is pretty easy to navigate on. The map update was simple but just expect it to take awhile. The traffic portion seems to work however to date it has not offered any alternate routes so I can’t judge its effectiveness. Nor have I tried the blutooth functionality.

This unit comes with everything you need so unless you want extra power cords or something there is no need for anything extra. The window suction cup works well. The unit fell once but I found I did not seat the suction cup very well. They do have a weighted mount that sits on the dashboard which would be better if you have a co-pilot and you need to look for alternate addresses or something. I found putting the unit in the middle of the window creates an annoyingly large blind spot. So I now put it to the left of the steering wheel.

Review By Ray - I am a longtime Garmin user who upgraded from a Garmin 765T to a Garmin 1450LMT. The main reasons I decided to upgrade were because my unit was already starting to get pretty old so I wanted something with a faster processor that wouldnt take so long to calculate a route when I input an address. The second and third main reasons were because I wanted a bigger screen and my maps were already over a year old and out of date so I figured it would be better to get a new, more modern unit instead of spending $100 for a map subscription on a unit that was getting older the longer I owned it.

All the menus on the 1450LMT were nearly identical to the ones on my 765T, the only differences on the two units are the color of the case, screen size, the mounting system, and that the 1450LMT has free lifetime traffic. That being said, in an age where smart phones are getting tons of apps to make them more useful, Garmin hasnt really evolved much over the past few years, still offering the same functions and features they did a couple of years ago unless you want to purchase a subscription to Nulink!.

Smart phones are quickly catching up to standalone gps units in usefulness, features, and affordability of extra features. Do you want to book an appointment for a hotel, restaurant, or event nearby? no problem a smart phone has you covered as easy as installing an app for free. Do you want to read reviews on places you want to go to before you get there? no problem a smart phone app has you covered for free. Do you want to find the cheapest gas around the area where your at? no problem with the gasbuddy smartphone app you can find the cheapest gas without having to pay for an extra monthly subscription.

Garmin should be busy finding ways to evolve instead of thinking of new ways to stuff their pockets with money. Please Evolve Garmin or face being obsolete in a couple of years in the battle against smart phones.

Cons

- Doesnt come with Garmin NuLink! like the Nuvi 1690 and Nuvi 1695 (searches for cheapest nearby gas, tells you when there is road construction nearby, and local events).
- I couldnt get screen protectors to work with the unit, it wouldnt let me click on the screen when I had a screen protector on it. It will likely have many fingerprints and scratches after a couple of months of use. Garmin should include one already installed on the unit for the price the unit cost.
- There arent really that many useful addons that you can install on this unit, and the few that there are on garmins site you have to pay garmin some more money to use them. It would be nice to have addons that find the cheapest gas (without paying a subscription), give you ratings for hotels, restaurants, etc. Smart phones are already able to download an App called gasbuddy that is FREE and tells smart phone owners where the cheapest gas is around them, I dont see why a GPS cant do this as well instead of trying to milk more money from owners by making it part of the Nulink! subscription that is only available on some models.
- Garmin hasnt really evolved much over the years, smart phones are quickly catching up (read my review to see what im talking about)

While its true that smart phones are quickly catching up in usefulness to standalone gps units the screen on smart phones is still much smaller and more difficult to read making it less then ideal to use for driving. This could easily change in the future if cars started to include LCD tv’s as a standard that can be hooked up to smart phones to display the smart phone screen on the

LCD and allowing passengers to watch tv on the LCD when not using the smart phone gps. For the present time however it really is worth it to buy a standalone gps unit for the bigger display, spoken navigation, and 3d maps for tricky turns. Garmin should let owners install smart phone apps on their nuvi units for free however, it could be easily done with a software update if they really wanted to do it but they wont because then nobody would pay for the nuLink! subscriptions.
